Micrografting tools for rejuvenation, reinvigoration or preservation of selected genetic resources

The broad-leaved Elm is endangered by the dutch elm disease. In order to secure the genetic resources, a cryopreserved collection of dormant buds has been established at FCBA. An effective way to reactivate this species from the cryopreserved stock is meristem micrografting on young micropropagated shoots from Ulmus minor. Acclimatized micrografts can be subsequently re-established in the field.

In maritime pine, meristem micrografting on young seedlings can be used for in vitro establishment of mature, selected trees. This is an efficient way for partial rejuvenation of genetic resources. Young micrografts can expressed junenile morphological characteristics (production of primary needles). Some organogenetic capacities can also be reactivated such as the rooting ability.
